Study finds aviation students hide mental health struggles

Mental health in the aviation industry is a difficult topic. Those who are pilots or air traffic controllers need to be approved by the Federal Aviation Association. This stamp of approval is often referred to as their “medical”. A medical license allows aviation workers to fly and control planes. However, the requirements to receive a medical are strict. A diagnosis of ADHD, depression or anxiety can prevent someone from receiving their medical.

In a study conducted by Embry–Riddle Aeronautical University, it was found that 67% of aviation students do not receive mental health help out of fear they’ll lose their medical license. 29% say they have withheld health information during health screenings.

The decision to hide mental health struggles has become an industry-wide issue, sometimes even ending in tragedy. TV2’s Erin Sullivan has more of the study’s findings.
