Local Collector Opens Vintage Clothing Store in Downtown Akron

Clothes may go out of style but for some that just means another piece to add to their collection.

Walking into Modern Traditions CO the first thing you’re greeted by is the front end of an old truck. Which sets the tone of what you’re going to find inside.

“I think there is something inside here for just about anyone if you look hard enough,” Aaron Gascon of Modern Traditions CO said.

Finding a piece of vintage of clothes is “like a treasure hunt,” Gascon said.

Gascon has been collecting clothes for has long has he can remember. From skipping school on Fridays while he was in high school to going to the local secondhand shops just to see what they had.

“Going to the flea markets really got me into the reselling part of the game,” Gascon said. “And opened me up too many different clothes that are out there.”

Over time Gascon started to love the collection aspect more than the value of the clothes.

“After finding something that just looked weird and doing some research and seeing that I may have the only one left those are the pieces that I want to keep in my collection,” Gascon said.

Gascon’s collection had taken over every room in his house, and this was when he wanted to look to move into a store. He knew some people that had partnered with Akron’s Bounce Innovation Hub.

The Bounce Innovation Hub is in downtown Akron and partners with small entrepreneurs to help them grow their brand in the city.

“And what’s helped me the best has been Bounce Innovation Hub, because them wanting to grow small businesses, not only do they keep the rent affordable for small businesses, but then they also have so many contacts that I can reach out to,” Gascon said.

One thing that is common when it comes to vintage clothes is that they can be pricy. Some pieces can go for hundreds of dollars. Gascon wanted his store to be different when it came to prices.

“The prices are so high that you might be able to get one t shirt. And that’s it for the month. So that that’s what makes my place different is here you’re going to find 100 one-of-a-kind pieces. And you can get 10 of them for the price of what you would pay at another store,” Gascon said.

Besides the secondhand shops or other vintage shops where else would be a good place to find old clothes? How about an abandoned house in West Virginia.

On a camping trip Gascon came across an abandoned house on a friend’s property and pretty much the only part of the house that remains is the bedroom closet.

“These were super rare, hard to find pieces from the 50s and the 60s that through my whole experience of searching for clothes, that’s the first time I’ve ever come across them. And here they are all together in this abandoned home,” said Gascon

Thanks to a Tik Tok that has gained over one million views Gascon has seen an increase in messages and just how important social media can really be.

“It changed my life,” Gascon said. “Keeping up with messages has meant a lot of a lot of fun.”

Modern Traditions is currently appointed based, but every couple of weeks there is an open house where you can pop in and just wander the store.

The next open house will be Feb. 25 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Feb. 26 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
